Types of Knots

When wrapping rocks, one can use several types of knots to achieve different effects. The most common knot used is the basic knot, which is simple and effective in securing the rock in place. The square knot is another popular choice, creating a neat and tidy finish. The clove hitch is ideal for larger stones, as it provides a more secure hold. The bowline knot is perfect for creating a loop to hang the rock, while the fisherman's knot is excellent for attaching two pieces of rope. Ultimately, the type of knot you use will depend on the size and shape of the rock and the intended use of the wrapped stone. Basket weaving knots are also a go-to choice for Zen-wrapped rocks and pebbles. The Japanese Basket Weave knot is famous in Southwest Art Décor. First, gather your materials: natural strand cane, Danish cord, and round reed. Next, choose a rock to wrap. The size and shape of the stone will determine the amount of materials needed. Begin by covering the material of your choice around the rock, starting at the bottom and working your way up.

Make sure the cane is tightly secured around the stone. Once the club is wrapped around the rock, start wrapping any additional materials you'd like to use, like Danish cord, around the cane. Again, begin at the bottom and work your way up.

The cord should be wrapped tightly, making sure to cover the cane completely. Finally, wrap the round reed around the cane and cord, starting at the bottom and working your way up. The reed should be wrapped tightly, and the ends can be tucked under the wrapped cord for a clean finish.

Repeat these steps until the entire rock is covered in the desired pattern. With these materials, you can create beautiful and unique rock-wrapping designs, elevating your artistic game to the next level. You can use one material at a time or a variety of materials to get your desired effect. Check out the Complete Blue Pastels Rock Wrapping Kit. Just in time for Easter. Wrapping rocks with natural strand cane is a delightful way to add a touch of nature to your home décor. Strand cane comes from rattan and is actually the rattan peel of the vine. The techniques for creating unique patterns for your cane-covered rocks are endless! For example, you can create a simple spiral pattern by wrapping the cane around the rock in a single direction. For a checkerboard effect, alternate the direction of the cane wrapping.

To achieve a more intricate design, consider a herringbone pattern, where you weave the cane over and under itself to achieve a diagonal effect. The possibilities are endless, so let your imagination run wild and create a stunning showpiece that will delight everyone who sees it! HH Perkins sells coils of strand cane in 500 ft and 1,000 ft bunches.

This is enough material to create dozens of wrapped rocks with natural strand cane. As you progress, you can create more intricate designs and experiment with different cane sizes to achieve the desired effect. Fine 2.5mm Strand Cane is always a great cane size to start with. Always soak your cane in water before weaving knots. Water makes the cane more pliable, durable, and easier to work with.

Danish Cord

To wrap rocks in the Japanese style with Danish cord, you will need to follow these steps:

  1. Choose a suitable rock. Make sure that it is smooth and has no sharp edges that could damage the cord.
  2. Cut a length of Danish cord. The length will depend on the size of your rock and how many times you want to wrap it. As a general rule, you will need around 5-6 times the circumference of the rock.
  3. Tie a knot at the end of the cord, leaving a tail of around 5cm.
  4. Place the rock in the center of the cord and wrap the cord tightly around the rock.
  5. After three or four wraps, take the tail of the cord and thread it through the loops, creating a knot.
  6. Continue wrapping the cord around the rock, making sure that each wrap is tight and neat.
  7. When you reach the end of the cord, tie another knot and cut off any excess cord.
  8. To finish, you can add a tassel or bead to the end of the cord for decoration.

These instructions should help you create a beautiful Japanese-style wrapped rock using Danish cord. You can use Unlaced Danish Cord or Laced Danish Cord. The choice is up to you, and both make stunning designs.

Another idea is to use them as table centerpieces or as part of a larger display with other natural elements like plants and flowers. Get creative and have fun experimenting with different ways to use your beautiful wrapped rocks! Once you've mastered the art of rock wrapping, try using other materials like seashells or crystals.

Round Reed

  1. Choose a round reed that is thick enough to hold the weight of the rock you want to wrap. Soak the reed in water for about 10 minutes to make it more pliable. Most customers use the #2 or #3 Round Reed from HH Perkins when choosing the size of Round Reed they need.
  2. Place the rock in the center of the reed, and fold the ends of the reed up around the rock, creating a "U" shape.
  3. Twist the ends of the reed together at the top of the rock, and begin wrapping the reed tightly around the rock in a spiral pattern.
  4. As you wrap, gradually move down the rock, making sure to keep the reed tight and even.
  5. Once you reach the bottom of the rock, tuck the end of the reed under one of the previous wraps to secure it.
  6. You can leave the wrapped rock as is or add other decorative elements, such as beads or twine. Some HH Perkins customers will wrap a piece of a larger Round Reed down the center of the rock.

Keep in mind that this is just one way to wrap rocks in the Japanese style, and there are many variations and techniques to explore. Have fun, and enjoy the process! If you'd like to shop other Round Reed styles check them at HH Perkins. A Round Reed #1 coil comes with 1,600 feet of premium cut reeds for only $15.50! You can make a lot of Zen Stones with that!

  • Hi Pattee, I think the Caning Awl or the Micro Awl works best. The Caning Awl works great with larger rocks. If you’re using smaller rocks the micro awl works better. I added a link to the caning awl on the website. Thanks for reading 😀.
